Flyers get first victory of season

The Schaumburg Flyers earned their first win of the season, defeating the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 4-3 on Friday night at Alexian Field.

Flyers starter Brad Mumma worked 6 innings, allowing 1 unearned run and striking out seven for the win.

Vince Harrison, Peanut Williams and Chris Gaskin each hit solo home runs for the Flyers. A two-out double by shortstop Mark Haske scored right fielder Lance Koenig from third base in the seventh.

In the ninth, a solo home run by pinch hitter Dan Maycock, his second in as many nights, cut the Flyers' lead to 4-3. But Jim Popp, the lone returning Flyer from 2007, closed it out for the save.

Rattlers top Cougars: Corey Brown and Matt Ray each hit 3-run home runs for the Kane County Cougars, but it wasn't enough in an 8-6 loss to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers before 2,572 at Time Warner Cable Field in Appleton, Wis. The Cougars never led and lost the opener of a road series for the first time this season.

Scott Moore (1-2) made his first start of the season but struggled and couldn't make it out of the third inning after yielding 4 runs in 2½ innings. Brad Hertzler took over and kept the Rattlers contained through the fifth, setting up Brown's long, 3-run blast in the sixth that made it 4-3. It was Brown's first homer since April 18 in Lansing.

Cougars reliever Lance Sewell gave up 4 runs in the sixth inning. The Cougars' rally fell short after Ray's 3-run homer in the ninth.
