Naperville looking to hire census-takers

Naperville wants to hire 175 residents to help with a special census scheduled for this summer.

City leaders say they're looking for residents willing to serve as enumerators, crew leaders and clerical staff.

Enumerators will visit households in the special census areas and collect basic facts about each member living in a housing unit, such as name, age and relationship to a householder. They will be paid $13.75 an hour, plus mileage and paid training.

The city also is looking for crew leaders, who will receive $15.25 an hour, and clerical staff, who will be paid $10.50 an hour.

Interested applicants can visit the city's Web site at www.naperville.il.us/specialcensus.aspx to review a job description fact sheet to determine if they meet eligibility requirements. All prospective applicants must be at least 18.

Prospective enumerators and crew leaders must have a valid driver's license and a vehicle available for their use; the ability to hear responses and read questionnaires; work a minimum of 20 hours a week; be available for day, evening and weekend work; be available for a three-day training session; and have access to a private, corded home telephone.

People can register with the city at the Web site and a job application will be e-mailed to them. Applicants will be contacted prior to the start of the special census to take a job-related test to further determine suitability for census employment.

The job description fact sheet available on the Web site also includes information about identification documents that must be brought to the testing session.

Completed job applications will be brought to the testing session as well.

If selected, workers will be invited to attend a training class and then given a work assignment that lasts three to five weeks.

Naperville is holding the special census in select areas of the city where significant population growth is believed to have occurred since the last decennial census in 2000.

Officials say the new count is important because state income tax and motor fuel tax revenue is distributed on a per capita basis.

Naperville last held a special census in 2003.
