Roselle shooting victims include 7-year-old boy

Two adults and a 7-year-old boy were found shot to death inside their Roselle home today in what appears to be a double murder and suicide.

A 60-year-old man, his 47-year-old wife and their son were found inside the single-family home at 746 N. Woodfield Trail, Roselle police said.

Friends of the family have confirmed that the victims are Michael J. and Rebecca Fontana and their son, Joe.

The body of Becky Fontana was discovered this morning by her mother, who checked the home after her daughter failed to show up for an outpatient procedure she was scheduled to have at Alexian Brothers Medical Center.

The mother found her daughter unresponsive in the home and called 911, a friend reported. Police arrived to find the other two bodies.

Friends said Becky Fontana was discovered lying on the bed in the master bedroom on the first floor.

Acting Deputy Chief John Lawson said the boy was lying on a bed in a bedroom on the second floor. His father was on the floor of that bedroom, with the gun lying beside him.

Authorities said both Becky and Joe Fontana had been shot multiple times. They added that there was no letter left behind explaining a motive.

Police said they do not believe there is a suspect at large.

"The community and residents are not in any danger," Lawson said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office plans to conduct autopsies on all three bodies Thursday.

Becky Fontana's mother worked in the circulation department of the Daily Herald for about 10 years until earlier this year.

Her former co-workers expressed shock and sadness today at the news.

Joe Marek, the single copy sales manager for the Daily Herald, said Becky Fontana's mother told him she went to Alexian Brothers this morning to give her daughter a ride home after her procedure. She was surprised when her daughter didn't appear, and after calling the house and getting no answer, she drove there.

Joe Fontana, Marek said, was "the cutest kid in the world."

Police also said they had responded to the house four times since 2004, but never for a domestic call. Two of these visits accompanied ambulance calls, one was for the theft of an ATV and one was for a report of criminal damage to property.

Authorities said there were no active orders of protection within the family.

Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 confirmed that youngest victim was a first-grader at Nerge Elementary, just down the street from the home.

Based on the recommendation of Roselle police, the school was not locked down during the investigation.

No announcement was made at the school today because police have not released his name. The school has crisis management specialists available at the school today for staff members and plans to do so again Thursday.

"They were quiet, really nice people," said Isabelle Raymondo, a neighbor two houses down. "This is very shocking."

She had no inkling of any problems. In fact, the boy was good friends with her daughter.

Bob Goedke, president of The Trails Homeowners Association, said the entire neighborhood was shocked, and that Mike Fontana always seemed a very attentive father.

"He was very devoted to his son," Goedke said.

Mike Fontana was in business for himself, accompanied by two sons from a previous marriage, Marek said.

Another neighbor, Mary Salat, said Mike Fontana would walk Joe to school every day and she would see them and exchange pleasantries. The little boy was getting ready to join her son's Cub Scout troop, and she saw the father and son biking and sledding.

Salat said she's lived there 3#189; years and had seen Becky Fontana no more than three times.

None of the neighbors said they heard any gunshots.

Police took a pet cat, which was not injured, from the house.
