Carmel 8, Woodstock 0

One thing Carmel Catholic's girls soccer team knows how to do is score goals.

The Corsairs showed off their finishing skills again Tuesday, opening up the playoffs by striking for 5 goals in five minute span.

Second-seeded Carmel coasted to an 8-0 shutout over No. 15 Woodstock (3-17-3) in a Class AA Warren regional semifinal in Gurnee.

Sara Petermann and Kassidy Brown each had a pair of goals and an assist for the Corsairs, who improved to 18-1 and earned a berth in Saturday's 11 a.m. regional final against the winner of today's game between No. 7 Warren and No. 10 Harvard.

Lisa Schostok added 2 goals for Carmel, while Alex Hauser and Leah Einarsen had the others.

Julie Schaser notched three assists, Hauser and Maddie Ogrinc also picked up assists.

"We do real good together because we play off each other so well," said Brown, who has 15 goals. "Sarah (Petermann) has the speed, I've got the finesse and Maddie (Ogrinc) is a real good finisher."

Carmel netted 5 goals in a half for the sixth time this season.

Brown opened the scoring in the 20th minute. She took a pass from Ogrinc, made a move and beat keeper Ginelle Ellis.

Petermann made it 2-0 49 seconds later off a pass form Schaser and Petermann scored.

Brown notched her second goal on a header courtesy of a Petermann corner kick in the 23rd minute.

A minute later, Hauser made it 4-0 by scoring off a Petermann assist.

Petermann scored her 31st goal of the season and second of the game after taking a pass from Schostok in the 25th minute.

"We did what we needed to do offensively," Carmel coach John Halloran said. "Once you get to the playoffs, each round you go through, the goals you get are going to get more scarce.

"It will become a matter of taking care of the chances we get and playing more defensively."
