Golfers turn out to help United Way

More than 136 golfers headed to the links April 30, to participate in the Northwest Suburban United Way's 12th annual Gattas Golf Classic at the Mount Prospect Golf Club.

Sponsored by Northwest Community Hospital, the event featured a scramble format and a shotgun start, raising $20,000 to benefit the communities served by Northwest Suburban United Way.

Winners, with the lowest gross score, were: Nick Papanicholas, Andy Bennett, Ed Doherty and Scott Whisler, guests of Nicholas & Associates. Ron Buch, Sharon Smith, Linda Borton and Ed Soban of Northwest Community Hospital earned first place, net team score, while Dave Barr, John Tofano, Andy Nyberf and Steve Kozer of Midwest Bank won second place, net team score.

• Ted Lewis was formally recognized and publicly commended May 6, for his dedication to the Bartlett Park District over the past 25 years.

Lewis was first elected to the board of commissioners of the Bartlett Park District for a six-year term in 1983. He was re-elected for four additional six-year terms in 1989, 1995, 2001 and 2007. He served as an officer of the board for 15 of those years -- as president for seven years, vice president for four years and treasurer for four years.

Also instrumental in getting the Parks Foundation off the ground, Lewis has served as chairman of the foundation's board of trustees since its inception in 2002.

Active in the Bartlett Community, Lewis is also a member of the Lions Club; a founding member of Bartlett's Fourth of July committee; serves on the Harris Bank board of directors, St. Edward High School Foundation and the Bartlett Centennial committee; is a board member of the Bartlett Athletic Association and Bartlett Little League; is a member of the Ruzica Park Development committee; and a soccer coach.

• The Illinois Geographical Society honored William Rainey Harper College students Robert Sullivan and Iwona Drozd with its Outstanding Community College Geography Students Awards.

Sullivan and Drozd received public recognition, a certificate of achievement and a small financial award.

The Illinois Geographical Society promotes scientific research in geography, encourages better teaching of geography, diffuses geographic knowledge and unifies geographic interests in the state.

Michael McKinnon of Oak Brook was re-elected to a fourth consecutive one-year term as a College of DuPage board of trustees chairman. He is currently serving his second six-year term on the board after being re-elected in 2003. He also has served as chairman of the board's finance committee from 1997 to 2002, on the facilities master plan committee from 2001-03.

Also added to the board are Mark Nowak of Addison for a third time as vice chairman and Thomas Ryan of Lombard, vice president of administrative affairs at COD, re-appointed to a one-year term as board treasurer.
