Briefs: Students name mascots
Larsen Middle School's eighth-hour class taught by Trish Arntsen chose the winning names of the city of Elgin's mascots for recycling and trash. They are Leftover Larry the trash mascot, and Reusable Rick the recycling mascot. Together they will be known as the Dynamic Duo.
Glitch disrupts Comcast
Comcast Internet and telephone services were disrupted early Thursday morning by a technical glitch during network maintenance overnight. It is not known how many customers were affected by the disruption that spread through the Chicago area and other Illinois markets. Service was restored at 10:30 a.m., about six hours after connections went down. A Comcast representative said the company is still investigating what caused the interference.
Decoy collectors' show
Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles will host the National Antique Decoy and Sporting Collectibles Show today and Saturday. Among the items on display will be antique Canadian decoys. There also will be seminars for beginning and longtime collectors. The show runs 2 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Sleepy Hollow marks 50th
To kick off its 50th anniversary celebrations, Sleepy Hollow will hold an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Village Hall, 1 Thorobred Lane. The village was incorporated on April 29, 1958 and celebrations are planned throughout the year. The village also is selling native trees to promote the anniversary as well as the environment. Trees are available for pick up and purchase Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at village hall. About 40 trees are still available, including red maple, autumn blaze maple, burr oak, serviceberry, river birch, red bud and American hornbeam.
