Cortese rolls to national championship

Hoffman Estates senior bowler Natalie Cortese won the Denny's All-American High School Championships by defeating Samantha Santoro of Pennsylvania 239-139 on Sunday in North Brunswick, N.J.

Cortese, who with her twin sister Amanda is headed to the University of Central Missouri, had 5 of her 7 strikes in succession to earn a $3,000 scholarship in the match that will be shown at noon Saturday on ESPN.

In a doubles match with PBA bowlers that followed, Cortese and Kelly Kulick beat boys champion Travis Mager of Alaska and Tony Reyes 215-194.

Zidron to Valparaiso: Tom Zidron, an all-conference safety who helped lead Wheeling to a share of the Mid-Suburban East football title and first playoff berth since 1996, has committed to play at Division I-AA Valparaiso.

Corrections: Fremd senior Jenna Langhorst won the championship of the Schaumburg badminton invitational Saturday. A story in Sunday's edition incorrectly reported she finished second.

Langhorst also finished fifth in the state in singles last season as Fremd won the state championship. An earlier story incorrectly had Langhorst finishing fifth in doubles and Fremd taking third.
