• Air Force Airman Joseph S. Scaccia, a 2006 graduate of Schaumburg High School, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

• Army Pfc. Kevyn W. Kasch, son of Mark and Suzanne Kasch of Schaumburg, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, Kasch studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.

The private is a 2007 graduate of Schaumburg High School.

• Air Force Maj. Charles R. Bredfield is deployed in Southwest Asia to support the missions of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is assigned to the 386th Expeditionary Wing providing military aerial operations from its forward-deployed location to sites in Kuwait and Iraq.

Wing members are responsible for tactical airlift missions into Iraq, Kuwait, and the Horn of Africa region. C-130 cargo/transport aircraft fly regular missions that include rotating soldiers during their rest and recreation periods, transporting Iraqi police cadets, and resupplying forward-deployed troops.

Bredfield, a C-130 Aircraft commander/pilot with 14 years of military service who is regularly assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron, Ramstein Air Base, Kaiserslautern, Germany. He's the son of Peggy Bredfield of Schaumburg. His wife, Emily, is the daughter of Pam and Bill Robbins, Fairfield, Ill.

The major graduated from Schaumburg High School in 1989, and received a bachelor's degree in 1996 from Southern Illinois University.

• Donicio B. Silva graduated from Officer Candidate School Phase III training at North Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army National Guard.

The two-week Phase III training is the final phase of a three-phased, 14-month training period. The national guard officer candidate received "basic soldiering" instruction in leadership, professional ethics, soldier team development, combined arms tactics, weapons defense, squad drill, intelligence, land navigation, maintenance, communications, staff and general military subjects, field training exercises, and physical training and conditioning.

Officer candidates are tested and evaluated in leadership skills and teamwork abilities required of a commissioned officer. Students utilize acquired skills to function in "leader and follower" positions in squad and platoon-sized elements in a stressful and demanding field environment involving various tactical situations.

OCS students are selected and considered from colleges, active-duty enlisted ranks, and direct commissions.

Silva was formerly assigned to the 129th Regional Training Institute at Camp Lincoln with the Illinois Army National Guard in Springfield. He has served in the military for eight years.

He is the son of Olivia T. Silva of Schaumburg, and brother of David A. Silva, Chicago. His wife, Christine, is the daughter of Paul Figaro, and Charlene Figaro, both of Elk Grove Village.

The lieutenant graduated in 1985 from Gordon Technical High School, Chicago, and received a degree in 2001 from Columbia College, Chicago.

• Army Pvt. Philipe L. Brodeur, son of Elena Basham of Barrington, graduated from the Petroleum Supply Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Lee, Petersburg, Va.

The course is designed to train students in receipt, storage, issue, shipping and distribution of petroleum, oil and lubricant products used by the Army. Training included instruction in petroleum and water accounting, operating equipment associated with fuels and water distribution; and fueling and defueling operations and procedures on vehicles, aircraft and stationary equipment.

The private is a 2001 graduate of Schaumburg High School.

• Army Pvt. Nodosleey Motley, son of Tiny Motley, Chicago, and brother of Leekeysah Motley, Palatine, graduated from Basic Combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.
