Adult concert band to strike up show

Spring Valley Concert Band, Schaumburg's adult concert band, will present its annual spring concert, "A Musical Celebration: Thinking Outside the Bach's," at 4 p.m. today at Schaumburg's Prairie Center for the Arts, 201 E. Schaumburg Court, with tenor Oscar Menoyo singing arias from the operas "Tosca" and "Pagliacci." The band will play "Loch Lomond," selections from "Mary Poppins," an American Idol fourth season recording and signature Sousa marches. Admission costs $5.

Concert to benefit NIU scholarships

Prospect High School's Chamber and Varsity Choirs will perform a concert titled "… And the Light" at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights. Donations will be collected, with all proceeds going to the NIU Feb. 14 Student Scholarship Fund.

For the past two years, Prospect High School choirs have participated in Northern Illinois University's Choir Day held in the fall. This event has given these Prospect High School students a chance to work directly with university faculty and NIU students, bringing the tragedy of the Feb. 14 events closer to home. District foundation offers scholarships

Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211, through the District 211 Foundation, is offering students more than 20 scholarships. Ranging from $500 to $3,000 each, the scholarships are funded through donations, often in memory of a former student or teacher. Many are open to all students living in the district, though some are designated specifically for students attending one of the district's five high schools. Event to benefit women's programs

Friends of Home of the Sparrow will host its "April in Paris" benefit luncheon Thursday at Wynstone Country Club, 1 Wynstone South Drive, North Barrington. Boutique shopping starts at 9:30 a.m. followed by luncheon at 11 a.m. Tickets cost $50 each. All proceeds benefit Home of the Sparrow, a transitional housing, counseling and job-skills training program serving women of the Northwest suburbs. Internet safety talk at Elk Grove High

"Internet Safety and Cyber Bullying" will be presented at 7 p.m. Wednesday, in the school theater at Elk Grove High School. Elk Grove Village police officer Carl Sabo of the Crime Prevention section, former vice-chairman and chairman of the Illinois Crime Prevention Association, will provide internet safety tips, and information on MySpace, as well as ways to track internet use.
