The Warren-Newport Public Library District serves a population of approximately 58,000 within a 55-square mile area that covers all or most of Warren and Newport townships, including Gurnee, Wadsworth, Park City, Wildwood, Grandwood Park, Old Mill Creek, and portions of Grayslake, Millburn, Lake Villa and Waukegan.
Summer Bulbs: Learn from an expert about bulbs that can provide seasonal beauty during "Summer Bulbs" at 7 p.m. today. Sharon Yiesla from University of Illinois Extension will discuss using and caring for bulbs such as gladioli, dahlias and caladiums. Registration is required for the free program.
Spring Flowers: Watch Gurnee florist Jeanne Balmes create spring arrangements during "Spring Flowers" at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Find out the new trends in flowers, greenery and containers. Reservations are required and three centerpieces will be given away as door prizes.
Library closings: The Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee will be closed Friday for staff institute. The library will close May 26, for Memorial Day. In addition, the library will be closed on Sundays for the summer beginning May 25. Summer library hours are: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The library will also be closed Independence Day, July 4.
Teen activities: Teens in sixth grade and up are invited to the Warren-Newport Public Library for a series of activities:
• The TAG Team teen advisory group will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday.
• The next meeting of the Anime Club is from 4 to 6 p.m. May 15.
• A Finals Cafe will be offered for high school students from 3 to 7 p.m. May 21. Take a break and re-energize with treats, games and raffle prizes.
Let's talk books: Share ideas on books at the Warren-Newport Public Library in open book discussion groups under the leadership of librarian Debbie Hoffman.
• The Tuesday nonfiction group will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to tackle "Black Hawk: The Battle for the Heart of America" by Kerry A. Trask.
• The Tuesday evening fiction group will discuss "The Master Butcher's Singing Club" by Louise Erdrich at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
• The Saturday fiction group discusses "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak at 1:30 p.m. May 10.
New bookmobile stops: The bookmobile from the Warren-Newport Public Library visits close to 50 neighborhoods in the 55-square mile district with a biweekly schedule that runs five days a week. A new schedule took effect April 1 that includes new stops on Kenwood Avenue, Providence Village, Florida Avenue, Pembrook Oaks, Grandwood Park, Deerpath and Delaware Crossing in Gurnee; and in Druce Lake and Wadsworth. Monthly gatherings: Several library-sponsored groups meet monthly at the Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee and welcome new members. Three book discussion groups cover fiction and nonfiction on scheduled days, evenings and Saturdays. Stitch and Share meets at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. A local chapter of the Red Hat Society, Lovely and Lively Ladies of the Library, meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday. Finally, the Friends of the Library meets at 1 p.m. on the fourth Thursday.
