Elburn seeks volunteers for planters
The Elburn Chamber of Commerce is looking for workers who don't mind getting their hands dirty. No experience is necessary.
Volunteers are needed Saturday to help clean the village's 15 concrete pots and get them ready for planting, which will take place May 17.
Volunteers can meet at 8 a.m. at the Elburn and Countryside Community Center, 525 N. Main St.
"We want to clean the pots and check the soil and see if more needs to be added," said Shelley Weinlein of the chamber of commerce.
The pots are on Main Street throughout downtown Elburn and the winter's evergreen plantings will have to be removed to make room for spring blooms. There is also a planting area at North and First streets.
The chamber is also looking for individuals, businesses, families or organizations to adopt a pot for the summer. They would "make sure the pot has enough water and to keep the weeds out," said Erika Mennerick, chairman of the Adopt-a-Pot program. "The plants will be provided by the chamber."
Mennerick said both the cleaning project and planting May 17 should take about two hours. Volunteers should wear gloves and bring garden tools.
Deborah Satorius, owner of the Vibrant Garden, will be on hand May 17 to offer tips on organic gardening and selecting native plants.
