Briefs: Flood control beginning

Naperville will begin construction of phase three of the Steeple Run Watershed Project next week. This phase will focus on flood control along Huffman Street and require the complete removal and reconstruction of the street pavement, curbs and sidewalk from just north of Chicago Avenue to just south of School Street. The project is slated for completion in May 2009. Since this is a major construction project, access to driveways along portions of Huffman Street may be restricted. In addition, vehicular access to Huffman Street may be limited. For more on the project, visit www.naperville.il.us/ steeplerun.aspx.

Burglary suspect charged

Villa Park police said they have arrested a 39-year-old woman for burglarizing an apartment with a young child. Police said a man returning to his apartment around 7:30 p.m. Monday on the 300 block of West Division Street found the woman and a young child walking out with some of his belongings. Police found the woman Wednesday at her home in the same complex. Police said Deedra S. Vallandigham was charged with burglary, child endangerment and contributing to the delinquency of a child. Because she had four outstanding arrest warrants, she is being held at the DuPage County jail in Wheaton in lieu of a $100,000 bond. Police labeled the child in the case "a victim," and the youngster was not arrested.

St. Michael Parish School in Wheaton will sponsor a bike bonanza today. Participating students and their families will accept, repair and donate gently used adult and children's bikes. After the bikes are received on St. Michael Parish property, the students will walk or ride the bikes to the People's Resource Center and or DuPage PADS so that they can immediately be given to Wheaton-area children and adults. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school, 314 W. Willow Ave.
