Waubonsie Valley 5, Hinsdale Central 0

You can play well against Waubonsie Valley's girls soccer team for a spell, but those spells can often end with the Warriors scoring in bunches.

Just ask Hinsdale Central.

"The first 15 minutes, I thought we actually played a little bit," said Red Devils coach Skip Begley. "Then after their first goal, we just sat back and watched them come at us.

"They have speed, they're good on the ball, and they have a couple special players."

The Warriors (6-0-1) won 5-0 over the Red Devils (3-5-1) in opening-round play of this year's Naperville Invitational tournament in Aurora, getting 3 goals in an eight-minute span of the first half.

Waubonsie Valley's Bri Rodriguez had 3 assists and Vanessa DiBernardo and Rachel Bostick scored 2 goals each on the day. Megan Green also scored off a Catherine McClellan assist in the second half.

"(Hinsdale Central) gave us our first loss two years ago, and we tied last year," Rodriguez said. "We just came out with a lot of intensity."

"I was surprised. We definitely kept control of the game," Bostick said.

Rodriguez sent in one of the Warriors' 7 first-half corner kicks in the 13th minute, and Bostick rose above a crowd and headed it in for a 1-0 Waubonsie lead. DiBernardo scored from 17 yards out five minutes later, and scored again in the box in the 21st minute.

"We didn't battle too well in the first half, and we're just young and inexperienced," Begley said. "And we're not very good against physical teams right now, and they just kind of pushed us all over the field."

The Warriors can hearken back to their 2-2 tie versus Lincoln-Way Central this year for any motivation they might need to continue playing hard soccer, no matter the game situation.

They were up 3-0, but kept up their intensity through the second half. Green scored from the right side and Bostick finished on another Rodriguez assist in the 69th.

"We're trying to get the younger players to understand that once we get a lead, we need to sustain it," Bostick said. "As many goals as you get, you never stop."

Bostick now has 5 goals on the season, DiBernardo has 6 and Rodriguez posted her 11th assist of the season.

"I love assists," Rodriguez said. "I like them better than goals. My position is playmaker, so that's what I love to do."
