Lions' egg hunt planners hoping for good weather
Easter was incredibly early this year. There was even quite a bit of snow on the ground at the time.
So the Mount Prospect Lions Club members decided to hold their annual Easter egg hunt for visually impaired children three weeks late and are hoping the weather will cooperate.
The local service club will hold their egg hunt with specially designed beeping eggs from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, at the Westbrook School at Gillet Center, 201 S. Evanston Ave., Arlington Heights.
During the hunt, children will exchange the beeping eggs for candy and prizes. An ice cream social will follow inside the school. Children with normal vision also will be able to participate in the activity by wearing a blindfold to experience what it means to lose the use of their eyes.
By planning this event, the Mount Prospect Lions Club will be continuing an annual tradition begun by the Telephone Pioneers of America in the late 1960s. Back in 2001 Lions Club member Tony Baumstark, a past president of the Telephone Pioneers, suggested that the Lions Club take over the event if the Pioneers supplied the special beeping eggs, and they have been doing it ever since.
"Grease" is the word: In honor of the 50th anniversary of Prospect High School in Mount Prospect, the school's theater department is staging a musical portraying that era: "Grease." Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. April 16-19 in Prospect's theater, 801 W. Kensington Road.
"Grease" is the Tony Award-winning love story of Rydell High School students, Sandy and Danny, who live in a world of burger palaces, drive-ins, fast cars, and beehive hairdos. Known for songs like "Greased Lightnin'" and "Beauty School Dropout," the music department hopes that "Grease" will evoke nostalgia for the days when Prospect was new.
The cast features senior Kelly Nygren as Sandy, senior Sam Petricca as Danny, sophomore Laura Winters as Rizzo, senior Eileen Matthews as Frenchy, senior Jonny Brennan as Kenickie, senior Dayna Parenti as Marty, senior Katherine Shindoll as Jan, junior Blake Lonergan as Doody, junior Keith Laurenz as Sonny, and senior Dan Haddad as Roger.
Other featured cast members are Paul Zaremba, Kelsey Underwood, John Magnino, Dan Haddad, Tom Slusher, Christina John, and Julian Williams, to round out a cast of 60 Prospect students.
There is nothing like the energy of a high school production. So I'm planning to attend with a group of friends and none of us even have children involved.
Tickets can be purchased at the student activities office. The prices are $9 in advance and $10 at the door. Group rates are also available. For more, call (847) 718-5213.
Architect Daniel Burnham: Hear from the man who helped transform Chicago into a great American city during the late 19th and early 20th centuries: architect Daniel Burnham.
Dramatist R. J. Lindsey will present a dramatic "living history" portrayal of Burnham at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Mount Prospect Public Library, 10 S. Emerson St.
Lindsey's presentation about Burnham will include a slide presentation and narration that begins with the Great Chicago Fire; extends to Burnham's architectural masterpieces like Orchestra Hall and the "Great White City" that served as the centerpiece for the 1893 World's Fair and culminates with illustrations of Burnham's "Chicago Plan" of 1909.
