Fire damages home near Barrington

A fire that started in a basement craft room has left a Lake Barrington home temporarily uninhabitable.

No one was injured in the fire that broke out this morning on West Park Drive along the Fox River.

The fire spread from the basement to the first floor of the two-story house and caused an estimated $40,000 to $50,000 in damage to the structure and its contents, Barrington Fire Lt. Greg Keegan said.

Authorities weren't able to determine what sparked the blaze.

Keegan said the home's alarm company contacted the homeowner, who called for help after returning to the house and finding heavy smoke.

Alarm systems usually contact the fire department directly, Keegan said, but he didn't know why that didn't occur in this case.

Firefighters arrived just after 10 a.m. to find smoke coming from basement windows and fire on the first floor.

The home is just east of the Lake-McHenry county line near Fox River Grove. There are no hydrants in the area.

Another home on the same block was more seriously damaged in a January fire.
