Protests against violence

Aurora University students will hold a "Take Back the Night" observance targeting domestic violence at 6:30 tonight in the university banquet hall in Alumni Hall at 1410 Marseillaise Place. The Social Work Association and the Feminist Society are co-sponsors. Activities begin with "Silent Witnesses," an exhibit of 20 life-size mannequins depicting domestic violence. Six local social service agencies will distribute information. At 7:30 p.m. in the banquet hall, Jan Faulhaber, a staff member at Mutual Ground, an Aurora-based shelter for women and children, will speak. Visitors will comment on their experiences at 8 p.m., and a candlelight vigil and march in memory of victims will start at 8:30 p.m. at the Thornton Gymnasium.

Go native in Wasco

Learn how to select native trees and shrubs for easy-care beauty from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wasco Nursery and Garden Center on Route 64 three miles east of Route 47 in St. Charles. Presenter is Barbara Bates, horticulture educator at the University of Illinois Extension office in Kane County. Donation is $5. Kane legal grants

Kane County's bar association is accepting applications from nonprofit agencies for grants offering services for the legal needs of county residents. The grant program aims to encourage and reward cooperation and creativity among agencies to develop new legal programs. Applications for grants must be submitted by July 1. Funds will be distributed by Sept. 1. Call (630) 762-1915.

Clothing and toy sale

Kaneland John Stewart Elementary School in Elburn will host a spring and summer clothing and toy sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Gently used clothing, shoes, toys, games, books, jewelry and sports equipment will be on sale at the event, sponsored by the school's Parent Teacher Network. ECC role change

Elgin Community College's board of trustees recently approved a position change for Gena Glickman, vice president of teaching, learning and student development. Glickman will work as a special assistant to President David Sam. Glickman will leave ECC in June to head Manchester Community College in Manchester, Conn. Over the next three months, Glickman will focus her attention on "matters of vital importance" to ECC, such as the upcoming accreditation visit by the North Central Association.
