Briefs: Man rescued from Des Plaines fire

Des Plaines firefighters rescued a 41-year-old man from a burning house around 8:20 p.m. Thursday at 1155 Prospect, police said. According to reports, a neighbor saw flames through the front window and phoned 911. Firefighters found the man sleeping inside. He was treated for smoke inhalation at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. The fire appeared to be accidental and was started by something cooking on the stove. A damage estimate was not available.

Saturation DUI patrols

Mount Prospect Chief of Police John Dahlberg urges residents to avoid driving drunk at any time, but particularly during the St. Patrick's Day celebration. Officers will conduct saturation DUI patrols focusing on impaired driving today and Sunday morning. "Whether you are meeting a few friends at the local pub or attending a party at someone's home, if you plan on using alcohol, never drive while impaired and never let your friends drive if you think they are impaired," Dahlberg said.

Irish dance fundraiser

The Anam Mor Irish Dance School in Barrington is hosting its first-ever fundraiser at the Onion Pub and Brewery, 22N221 Pepper Road in Lake Barrington today. The dancers, including international champion Tyler Schwartz, will be performing during the fundraiser. The event, which starts at 6 p.m., also includes Irish music, food, drink and a silent auction. Tickets are $65 per person. Students from the Anam Mor School of Irish Dance and music in Barrington will be performing at several locations in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. Lions Club fundraiser

The Bartlett Lions Club, in conjunction with an open house next door at the Bartlett Police Department, will host a fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. All proceeds from the pancake breakfast will go toward sight- or hearing-related charitable causes. Many of the kids who will benefit are students in the hearing impaired program at the Horizon Elementary School in Hanover Park. The event will take place at the Bartlett Fire Barn, 218 S. Peace service today

A prayer service for peace in the Middle East will be held Lutheran Church of the Atonement on Main Street in Barrington at 7:30 p.m. today. Special guest is Issa Boulos, director of Middle East Music Ensemble at the University of Chicago. He is a composer, critic, lyricist and 'ud performer gaining worldwide recognition. The service includes reading from the Bible, music and prayers for peace in the Middle East. The service will continue to be held on the 15th of each month until lasting peace is achieved.

Roadside safety check

The Arlington Heights and Elk Grove police departments will conduct a joint roadside safety check from 10:45 tonight to 3 a.m. Sunday on Arlington Heights Road. Officers will stop cars at intervals to check for defective equipment, licensing and insurance violations and driving under the influence. The program is funded by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
