Time to calm the debate in Dist. 57
On Feb. 11, a writer compared Michael Withey and Rich Benson to "unscrupulous salespeople," stating "the good of all the district's children is not the true motivator for some members."
While I have my own beliefs regarding Westbrook, I truly believe that those with opposing views still care about the children. We just disagree on what is best. The judgmental language that has been tossed around this issue needs to stop. When we, as adults, are so intense with throwing accusations that we fail to listen, then it can be truly be said that none of us care about the children.
The letter accused Withey and Benson of not listening to the FRC. Please note that listening and obeying are two very different things. While the FRC was told not to consider finances, the board must. As Mr. Withey explained at the January meeting, due to financial restraints, the board may have to choose between moving the first grade and offering all-day kindergarten, both recommendations of the FRC. It is fiscally prudent to address all the information before implementing long-term plans.
The writer stated that, "I want my money spent on education, not personal agendas." Please be aware that even if the FRC's recommendations were followed to the letter, no additional teachers were going to be hired.
Despite this being clearly stated numerous times, some individuals maintain the false belief that moving first grade to Westbrook would allow class sizes to go down or additional programs to be added. That was not part of the recommendation.
Throughout this process, I have been troubled by the disrespect shown by members of the community. Despite numerous personal attacks, I have never witnessed Mr. Withey or Mr. Benson demonstrate any disrespect to anyone. They have shown their true colors to be ones of respect, integrity and honor. They deserve to be thanked for their service, not misrepresented in a letter to the editor.
