Briefs: Police to check motorists

The Arlington Heights and Elk Grove police departments will be conducting a joint roadside safety check from 10:45 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday on Arlington Heights Road. Officers will stop cars at predetermined intervals to check for defective equipment, licensing and insurance violations and driving under the influence. The program is funded by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Bilingual panel to meet

Parents of Spanish-language students across Palatine Township Elementary District 15 are invited to participate in the District 15 Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Winston Campus, 900 E. Palatine Road. Discussion topics will be discipline strategies and Internet safety. Speakers will be Raquel Martinez, a District 15 psychologist, and Juan Valenzuela, Cook County Safety Education Department's Hispanic liaison. Ryg to hold budget hearing

State Rep. Kathy Ryg of Vernon Hills invites the public to a regional budget hearing at 3 p.m. March 24 at Northbrook village hall, 1225 Cedar Lane. Attendees can share their views about what the state's funding priorities should be as lawmakers and the governor work to close a budget shortfall that fiscal experts project to be at least $750 million. Testimony is invited from social service providers, local governments, health care facilities, school districts, colleges, labor unions, business groups and civic organizations.
