Still putting cure ahead of prevention
The U.S. House passed H.R. 1424, calling for equal treatment of mental illness and substance abuse on par with other medical illnesses, but there still is a long way to go.
Many insurance companies refuse to pay for medication or treatment for smoking cessation yet cover the cost of a heart attack, emphysema, stroke or cancer related to years of smoking.
When society recognizes that investment in the prevention and treatment of mental health and substance abuse benefits society tenfold, we will be on track to a better life for all.
