Briefs: Crash victim still in critical

Adam Carr, a 27-year-old Bartlett man injured in an accident that shut down the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway Friday, remained in critical condition late Monday at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Carr was traveling east the expressway when his car struck something and spun out of control about 4 p.m. near Roselle Road. Carr had to be extricated and was flown to the hospital by helicopter.

Fire investigation continues

Investigators on Monday continued looking into the cause of a weekend fire that ravaged an Elk Grove Township mall. The fire at 2501 E. Oakton St. appeared to be accidental, authorities said. Insurance investigators are expected to take a few weeks to look into the blaze, which caused millions in damage. Authorities said the fire started in the Jujuani Electronics store about 7 a.m. Saturday. That business lacked smoke detectors, which weren't required at the time the building was built, fire officials said.

No flood, just a watch

A combination of frozen ground, warm temperatures, snow melt and rain led to runoff-swollen water flows on the Des Plaines River and Salt Creek in Cook County on Monday. Local officials were monitoring water levels but reported no major concerns. One backyard was reported flooded in Des Plaines. Salt Creek flows in Rolling Meadows remained below flood levels and seemed to be dropping, officials reported.
