Author to offer tips on getting boys to read

Boys typically like to play video games and sports.

To help add reading to the mix, Bloomingdale Public Library will host a presentation for parents and teachers from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today with Michael Sullivan, author of "Connecting Boys with Books."

"This is really for adults that are concerned about the topic," Library School Liaison Kandy Jones said. "I think sometimes it's information that parents are curious about, but they're not able to connect with someone who has really specialized in the area."

Sullivan will be attending the 28th annual Children's Literature Conference at Northern Illinois University, but the night before will stop at Bloomingdale's library for a preview of what he'll focus on during the conference.

Parents and teachers are especially encouraged to attend the program.

"Teachers, I'm sure, frequently have boys in class who don't enjoy reading, and this gentleman is a good resource for things you can do," Jones said. "There's a lot of information for teachers to take back to the classroom and also help communicate with parents."

Jones heard Sullivan speak a year ago on a similar topic, and found herself very interested in his discussion.

"He's an author, librarian, he had a great sense of humor and his presentation was casual and interesting," she said.

Jones said the library often invites authors as guest speakers.

"This is the first we've ever had on this topic," she said. "I think this one is a fairly unique presentation."
