• Sgt. Cynthia Abenante and Lt. Thomas W. Wirsing of the Lombard Police Department recently graduated from the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University's Center for Public Safety.

• Keisha Hoye, a senior at Glenbard East High School in Lombard, has been selected to be one of the 100 Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois, Class of 2008. Any Illinois student interested in a teaching career is eligible for the program. Finalists are chosen by Golden Apple Award-winning teachers. Scholars must earn a bachelor's degree from an Illinois college or university, become certified to teach and teach for five years at a district determined to be in need. Scholars also must meet academic requirements, attend a summer institute and comply with a code of conduct. In return, each student will receive tuition assistance for four years and $2,000 per summer.

• Kyle Miller of Roselle, a student at Technology Center of DuPage, was awarded first place for his submission to the 2008 Landscape Design Contest. Miller already does freelance landscape design, but after high school plans to enter the five-year landscape architecture program at Purdue University.

• Jacob Oakes of Glen Ellyn will attend the Congressional Youth Leadership Council's National Young Leaders Conference in April in Washington, D.C. The conference offers unique leadership training opportunities to high school students from all over the United States. Activities will include a detailed exploration of all three governmental branches, a chance to meet members of congress, the senate and the National Press Corps and more. Oakes, a junior at Glenbard South High School, has been nominated for membership in the National Honor Society and is a member of the school's varsity golf and baseball teams. His extracurricular activities include competitive bowling.
