Learn about horticulture: Learn about a career in horticulture by attending an information session at the College of Lake County.

Horticulture information sessions will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today, April 3 and May 1 in Room H110 in the Horticulture and Greenhouse Building (Building H), located on the southeast corner of the CLC Grayslake Campus.

The sessions are open to high school students, current or prospective CLC students and the public at large. Industry workers, garden enthusiasts, master gardeners and environmentalists are invited to learn more about the college's various course offerings.

Small business workshops: Entrepreneurs and small business people can improve their business skills by attending a series of workshops presented by the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the College of Lake County.

Upcoming workshops include:

• Protecting Your Family Owned Business: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. today, $35.

• Starting a Restaurant and Making it Profitable: 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, cost: $35.

• Turning Leads into Sales - Make Tire Kickers Buyers Every Time: 7 to 9 p.m. March 18, cost: $35.

• Do-it-Yourself Web Design: from 7 to 9 p.m. April 9, cost. $35.

• Marketing on the Web Using Constant Contact: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. April 22 and 29, cost: $70.

March Discovery Classes: College of Lake County Discovery programs offer adults 50 and over a range of topics.

The following Discovery classes will begin in March. Classes are held at the CLC Southlake Campus in Vernon Hills unless noted otherwise. For more information, call the Discovery! hotline, at (847) 543-6507.

• Today: "Diet and Coronary Heart Disease," taught by Lynnette Mensah at Village at Victory Lakes in Lindenhurst.

• Today, March 13 and 20: "Tesla the Inventor," taught by inventor and teacher Ted Karson.

• March 13 to April 17: "Beginning Watercolor Painting," taught by Francisco Loyola at Victory Lakes.

• March 27 and April 3: "Greek Myths Through Art and Travel," taught by Linda Rubin.

Chinese Language Program: Community members are also welcome to attend CLC's Chinese Language Immersion Program sessions from 9 a.m. to noon saturday, April 12 and May 10 in the lower lobby of the C Wing at the CLC Grayslake campus. Sessions are open to anyone with a desire to learn Chinese, including adults, high school students and CLC students. No proficiency is required to participate.

The Chinese Language Immersion sessions will feature four or five native Chinese speakers who facilitate a series of language-building activities. Refreshments will be provided, and participants may attend any or all sessions, with no commitment to attend future sessions.

Eileen Ivers: Eileen Ivers and her band, Immigrant Soul, will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County. Winner of nine All-Ireland fiddle championships and former fiddler for "Riverdance," Ivers combines a spirited mix of African and Latin percussion to create a tradition-rich yet inventive sound that delves into pop, jazz and world genres.

Tickets are $29 to $41 for the general public (discounts available), $13 for children under 12 and $16 for CLC students. Tickets are available at the CLC Box Office, by calling (847) 543-2300 or at www.clcillinois.edu/tickets.

Business skills training: The Continuing Professional Development department at the College of Lake County will offer seminars on business topics presented by corporate trainers.

The one-day seminars, designed to better prepare individuals to be productive members of today's workforce, are coordinated by CLC's Workforce and Professional Development Institute.

Business skills courses being offered this spring include Business Etiquette and Protocol on Wednesday, Exceeding Customer Expectations on March 19, Emerging Leader on April 11 and Business Writing on April 23. Seminars are available at both the Grayslake and Southlake campuses (Vernon Hills), and run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $199 per session per person.

Spring literary events: The College of Lake County Literary Arts Society will offer a variety of events for students and the community:

• "Little story slams" will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Library/Learning Resource Center Atrium. Refreshments will be served and certificates and cash prizes will be awarded.

• A reading reception to honor contributors to CLC's 35th edition of the award-winning literary magazine, "Willow Review," will be held at 7 p.m. April 17 in room C003. This free event will feature contributors reading from their original poetry and prose. Copies of the 2008 issue will be available at the reading. "Willow Review" is partially funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.

• The annual Shakespeare's birthday celebration will be held from noon to 4 p.m. April 23 in the Library/Learning Resource Center Atrium. "Mr. Shakespeare," an authentically costumed reenactor will answer questions about the Elizabethan era and present portions of the Bard's plays. Members of the community, students and professionals will read or act individually and in groups. Cake and other refreshments will be served.

Lunch & Learn Workshops: Sample the training resources offered by the Workforce and Professional Development Institute at the College of Lake County's Client Solutions at a "Lunch and Learn Series" session. A professional facilitator will deliver one hour of training in the following subjects:

• Improving Employee Work Habits: Wednesday in room T326, Grayslake campus.

• Essential Skills of Leadership: April 15 in room V336, Southlake Campus.

All Lunch and Learn sessions are from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $30 per person, which includes participant guide, lunch and beverage. To register, call (847) 543-2615 or visit wpdi.clcillinois.edu.

Jobapalooza Expo: Jobapalooza Expo: A Lake County Job Resource Fair for young adults ages 15 to 21 will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. March 13 at the College of Lake County Physical Education Center (Gymnasium, Building 7) on the Grayslake Campus.

Its goal is to bring local employers together with young people who are looking for full-time, part-time or seasonal positions. Some of the employers attending Jobapalooza include Target, Baxter, TCF Bank, UPS, Walgreens, Lake Forest Place and NorthPointe Resources, Inc.

Participants will receive information about the education and training required for different jobs, plus information on work permits, Social Security cards, personal finances and more. Young people who are "dressed to impress" could win a prize or gift card.

East Asian workshop series:

CLC will present an East Asian Workshop Series in the spring that is open to the community. The series includes five workshops focused specifically on China.

Sessions are held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the CLC Grayslake campus, and include:

• Survey of Chinese History: Ancient and Modern on March 13.

• Political Tradition and the Communist Party Rule on March 20.

• Cultural Elements in Contemporary China on April 3.

• China's Economy: Achievement and Challenges on April 10.

• Where Do We Go from Here: China's Future on April 17.

Each workshop features lecture, interactive discussion, activities, a question and answer session and refreshments. Participants attending all five workshops will receive a voucher for a Chinese dinner and discussion led by CLC's Chinese visiting faculty member Fangjun Li on April 24. International Film Series: There is no charge for films in the International Film Series, which will be screened at 7 p.m. on Friday nights in room A162 on the CLC Grayslake Campus. The films are subtitled when necessary, have adult content and are not suitable for children. "Offside" which follows a group of female soccer fans in their attempts to disguise themselves as men and sneak into the largest stadium in Tehran, where women are forbidden, will be screened on March 14. "The Host," which merges a dysfunctional family comedy and a monster movie, will be shown on April 25.

2007-08 Concert Season: The College of Lake County Music department has planned announce its 2007-08 season. Concerts will be held in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $4 for CLC/seniors/children unless noted (price includes $1 JLC restoration fee). Tickets are available in person, by calling the Box Office at (847) 543-2300 or online at www.clcillinois.edu/tickets.

• Wind Ensemble with guest conductor Steve Eggleston: 4 p.m. March 16.

• Gospel Choir: 4 p.m. March 23.
