Student film fest offer something new for movie goers
Have you already seen all of this year's Academy Award-nominated films and are looking for something new and different at the movies?
Tonight is a rare opportunity to see some budding, young filmmaking talent right here in Schaumburg.
The second annual Screen Test Student Fest will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at Schaumburg's Prairie Center for the Arts, 201 Schaumburg Court.
Admission costs $5 per person, $4 for students and seniors and popcorn is $1.
The fest consists of 10 student short films that run from 3 to 14 minutes. The majority of the writers and directors are high schoolers from the Northwest suburbs:
• "An Odd Package," co-written and directed by Hanover Park senior Matt Leher.
• "Clap Hands," written and directed by junior Emma Horner of Bartlett.
• "Cold Reflections," written and directed by junior Dane Shubert of Chicago.
• "Crazy," written and directed by Bartlett senior Allison Haeussler.
• "King III: The Fellowship of the Kings," co-written and directed by Ben Richardson of Algonquin.
• "Mr. Moustache," written and directed by junior Emma Horner of Bartlett.
• "Of King and Man," written and directed by Algonquin freshman Jon Richardson.
• "Peace," a documentary co-directed by sophomores Stephen Sotor and Trace Gaynor of Elmhurst.
• "The Race," written and directed by senior Raag Harshavat of Schaumburg.
• "The Road," written and directed by Hanover Park senior Katie Matz.
The 10 films run the gamut of categories from experimental to comedy to drama to nonfiction.
Sponsors include Roosevelt University, the Prairie Center Arts Foundation, ARK Innovations LLC and puplife.com. See dailyherald.com for interviews with several filmmakers, plus two of the films in full.
Free airplane rides: Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 101 will start its new season of Young Eagle Rallies at Schaumburg Regional Airport from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 6.
Young Eagles is a program promoting aviation to children and teens of the community, ages 8 to 17.
Visitors to the airport can meet the pilots and see the different aircraft. Those in the Young Eagles age range are guaranteed a free flight if they so choose.
They'll be able to see the Chicago skyline, O'Hare Airport and, much closer, Alexian Field and Woodfield Mall like they've never done before.
Those who definitely want to fly should show up no later than 2 p.m. to help ensure time doesn't run out.
If you can't make it April 6 but are still interested, Young Eagle Rallies will continue at the airport during the same hours on the first Sunday of every month through December.
Schaumburg Airport is at 905 W. Irving Park Road.
