Jets, Sharks to dance across stage at Driscoll

In real life, rivalry takes center stage at Driscoll Catholic High School anytime its state champion football team meets an opponent.

But this week, the rivalry that really matters is the feud between the Sharks and the Jets that will play out during a student performance of "West Side Story."

And even though this musical is a classic, it's new to the Driscoll stage.

Director David Wampach said he kept the choice of "West Side Story" as a surprise until right before auditions. And when students learned they'd be trying out for the time-honored show, they were thrilled.

"They were all jumping up and down when they found out," Wampach said. "Even though the show is from about 45 years ago, the kids all know it and so many of the issues are timeless. When people think musicals, they think 'West Side Story.' "

Approximately 70 students in the cast, crew and band have been rehearsing since early winter. And Wampach said the 15 seniors in the cast have stepped into leadership roles with the younger students, encouraging them to perfect their dance routines and arrive early for practice.

"They're really taking charge and, at this point, I'm just sitting back and watching," he said.

To help raise funds for future performances, the Driscoll Parents Club will host s "Dinner and a Show" special at 5:30 p.m. Saturday that includes play admission, pasta and meatballs, salad, bread and dessert donated by Fonatno's Subs. Tickets are $20 and proceeds will benefit the theater department.
