Briefs: Park district hatches plan
Gurnee park board members recently approved a strategic plan that includes seven initiatives. The strategic plan is a document the district will use as a guide until 2011. Enhancing the park district's image through effective marketing, maintaining financial stability and addressing a perceived need for an indoor pool are among the seven initiatives in the strategic plan. The park district began creating strategic plans about 13 years ago. Park officials said the latest plan was formed with community feedback and work from the staff.
Chemical spill in Antioch
A delivery truck knocked down two utility poles Friday morning behind Piggly Wiggly, 460 Orchard St., Antioch, causing a power outage and a 250-gallon chemical spill. ComEd crews were reportedly able to clear the downed power lines and discovered the liquid entering the storm sewer. Antioch officials said the material was confirmed to be mineral oil and is not considered hazardous. Cleanup of the spill area, the storm sewers and Sequoit Creek were undertaken immediately by ComEd and the Village Emergency Management Team. Antioch officials say power was restored early Saturday and there is no imminent danger to the public or the environment.
