Another Wheaton bank robbed

Wheaton banks continued to be a popular target for robbers as yet another was the scene of a heist today.

A man wearing a ski mask entered First National Bank, 1151 E. Butterfield Road, about 10:20 a.m. and demanded money from a bank teller, according to police.

The robber displayed no weapons of any kind. He got an undisclosed amount of cash from the teller and left without injuring anyone.

Wheaton police were called to the scene after the robber left.

Since the department doesn't have its own canine unit, the Darien Police Department's canine unit was called to conduct a search of the area. The suspect was not found.

Now Wheaton police are investigating the robbery with assistance from the FBI.

Wheaton Deputy Police Chief Tom Meloni wasn't immediately reachable for comment Thursday.

The suspect is described as been 6 feet tall with a large build. He wore dark clothing in addition to the ski mask over his face.

Information released by police didn't indicate if the still-at-large Wheaton Bandit is a suspect in today's robbery. The bandit is suspected of robbing more than a dozen banks in the area during the past five years.

Several Wheaton bank robberies that occurred in recent years haven't been attributed to the bandit. The most recent was in August. That robbery was attributed to the Roosevelt Road Robber, who police believe they arrested in January.
