Judson softball sweeps St. Xavier

The Judson University softball team started the 2008 CCAC season off with a bang Thursday as the Eagles swept St. Xavier University at the Elgin Sports Complex.

The 2 wins are Judson's first-ever against St. Xavier and snap a 20-game losing streak against the Cougars. The Eagles are now 8-4 on the season overall.

Judson 4, St. Xavier 1: Nicole Dimiceli slammed her third home run of the year in the sixth inning to lead the Game 1 win. SXU scored the first run of the game in the first inning and then Judson tied it in the bottom of the inning. Judson then scored a run in the fifth inning on an Aimee Ewert single to take the lead, 2-1.

Ewert went 3-for-3 in the game and Dimiceli was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. Brittany Nicley also went 2-for-3.

Lizzy Jacobson improved to 3-1 on the year with the win and had 3 strikeouts with no earned runs.

Judson 9, St. Xavier 5: A 7-run second inning was the difference in Game 2 as Judson took an 8-0 lead after scoring another run in the third inning.

Amy Meier went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and Carrie Sensor, Dimiceli, Jacobson, Nicley, and Kristin Krueger each had 2 hits. Debra Leganski smacked her second home run of the year and had 3 RBI.

Glenbard South 5, Bartlett 2: Bartlett jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead, but a rough fourth inning put Glenbard South on top 4-1 and the Raiders went on to win this nonconference contest 5-2.

Lauren Wydra was inside the circle for the loss allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits while striking out 10 in the complete-game effort.

"Lauren had a gutsy performance," said Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith. "She battled through a rough fourth inning."

Wydra opened the fourth inning with a walk which Glenbard followed up with 3 consecutive hits. An error in the outfield allowed 3 runs to score.

"Against a quality opponent like Glenbard South, we need to play errorless ball," Wolfsmith said. "We did that for six innings and didn't for one inning. South took advantage of it.

"They are an excellent team, and a lot like us, they welcome back six players from a team that was one out away from state last year.

"I think they will be one of the best in 3A."

Elizabeth Kay was a bright spot in the Bartlett offense going 3-for-4 while nabbing her first home-run of the season to go with 2 RBI.
