All the news that's fit to print … by students
Print journalism is alive and kicking, I'm thrilled to report.
Last week I headed out to Hawk Hollow Elementary School in Bartlett to speak with a group of third and fourth graders starting a newspaper called Hawk Talk. Cute name, right?
I tried to be as informative as possible -- lessons on the inverted pyramid, how the Daily Herald zones its stories, where to place the most important articles on the front page, etc.
They had a variety of intelligent questions, but soon I saw where they were headed.
"Have you ever met anybody famous?"
The kids were most impressed that I've done the occasional American Idol wrapup for our back page. A trip out to Wrigley Field to cover last season's 7th Inning Stretch competition also amazed the boys.
Teacher Kim Deering will assume the role as editor-in-chief. She's helping to develop some really clever ideas her students have. One girl wants to look at today's fashions compared to what their own teachers wore when they were in school. Another wants to profile one of Hawk Hollow's budding singers.
Good luck to my savvy new friends and future reporters!

He'll then meet with kids and have his picture taken with them before setting off on his preparations for Easter the next day.
