Briefs: Voters forum canceled
The Elgin Area League of Women Voters has canceled tonight's forum in Elgin for candidates in the race for the 14th Congressional District seat. Jim Oberweis and Bill Foster, the candidates vying to fill out the term of retired congressman Dennis Hastert, were invited to participate at Elgin's Gail Borden Library, but league representatives say Foster could not attend.
North bands to battle
This year's Battle of the Bands at St. Charles North High School is planned for 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Seven rock and heavy metal bands featuring local high school students are scheduled to compete. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. Each audience member gets one vote. The school is at 255 Red Gate Road. Call (630) 443-5700 for details.
Police targeting speeders
Extra St. Charles police will be on duty targeting speeders in a monthlong campaign starting Saturday. Police said officers will focus on areas of Main Street, North Second Street and South Kirk Road. The effort is funded by an Illinois Department of Transportation grant.
Colonial donates to three
Colonial Café and Ice Cream recently donated $720.75 to three Fox Valley schools and organizations through its Colonial Cares Benefit Night program. The donations were $294 for Otter Creek Elementary School in Elgin; $367 for the St. Edward football team in Elgin; and $59.75 for St. Charles East High School. An exhibit of black-and-white photos by St. Charles East High School students is on display at Holiday Camera, 221 W. State St., Geneva. The exhibit is expected to run for several months.
