Mayor, residents demanding EPA act on recent methane leak
Hanover Park Mayor Rod Craig wants to assure residents that the dialogue continues with area officials regarding the methane leak at Mallard Lake Landfill.
This week he provided the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, at its request, with a long list of concerns.
In short, he wants answers.
Craig demands to know the cause of the leak, which came to light in November when the EPA began testing houses near Schick and County Farm roads. Methane, which can cause explosions, has been detected underground but not in any houses.
Craig wants to know what measures are being taken, as well as assurances from the EPA that future oversight will be more effective than in the past. He wants a timeframe, and thinks the notification process to Hanover Park and its residents has been inadequate.
Craig essentially hopes the EPA will be more transparent with its investigation.
"Residents of Hanover Park and I are concerned about the investment affected persons have in their homes," Craig wrote. "The village's highest priority is public safety and many in the area are looking for answers."
