All Schaumburg Twp. officials will seek re-election in 2009

All eight Republican incumbents in Schaumburg Township government have already vowed to seek re-election in the spring of 2009.

This time, though, they might face a full Democratic slate.

The GOP slate will include Highway Commissioner Robert Fecarotta, who's changed his mind since saying in December he would not run again.

Fecarotta said he was recently approached about joining the slate and felt there was still work to be done.

Currently, Trustee Susan Giannone is the only Democrat among the nine elected township officials. She confirmed Monday she will also seek re-election.

Challenging her for her spot will be Republican and former township Clerk Robert Vinnedge.

He was one of the Republicans unseated by STAR, the Schaumburg Township Alliance of Republicans, in 1997. Now he'll be joining many former members of STAR, which disbanded last year after its founder, state Rep. Paul Froehlich, turned Democrat.

Besides Fecarotta, the GOP incumbents seeking re-election are Supervisor Mary Wroblewski; trustees Diane Dunham, Scott Kegarise and Richard Taccini; Assessor John Lawson; Collector Peggy Franklin and Clerk Timothy Heneghan.

Schaumburg Township Democratic Committeeman Rocco Terranova said a full slate of Democrats will likely join Giannone in the 2009 election.

"Right now we're looking to have someone for every spot," Terranova said.

The most challenging office to fill is that of assessor, Terranova said, because it requires attendance of a class and certification. He suggested Froehlich, a former assessor, could return to the office, but Froehlich said he'd never consider it as long as he was still state representative.

In fact, he specifically resigned the office before because of his appointment as state representative, he noted.
