Police investigate District 158 complaint about vacation days

It's been a while since we've reported on the rash of complaints about administrators' vacation days filed with local authorities in Huntley Unit District 158.

Here's the latest: Huntley police say they're looking into the complaint forwarded to them by the McHenry County state's attorney.

"It's under investigation," Deputy Police Chief Todd Fulton said this week.

Fulton said police have been interviewing people in District 158, and should be able to provide more information on the case next week.

In November, the District 158 school board directed Superintendent John Burkey to file a complaint with the state's attorney alleging former Superintendent Steve Swanson granted paid vacation days to administrators without board approval.

In January, the state's attorney's office sent a letter to district saying there's merit to the complaint, and First Assistant State's Attorney Tom Carroll forwarded the complaint to Huntley police.

At that time, board President Shawn Green said District 158 fully intended to pursue the matter -- and that's what the district and Huntley police seem to be doing.

When I find out more, I'll let you know.

District 158's got talent: How about a round of applause for the students, parents, staff and community members who performed Sunday in District 158's Community Showcase at Huntley High School?

I wasn't able to make it, but I heard it was an impressive display of talent and practice.

What with Hayden, Weezer and Ruth Buzzi, it sounds like there was something for everyone -- from current students to grandma and grandpa.

Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Education Foundation, which helps students and teachers in the district.

Huntley choirs hit it big: The Huntley High School choirs just gave you another reason to go to a Chicago Rush football game.

The choirs will sing the national anthem at the Rush game at 7 p.m. March 22 at the Allstate Arena.

The Rush will play the Colorado Crush. For tickets, go to www.ticketmaster.com or call Shannon at (773) 243-3436.

Students headed to the zoo: About 85 second-graders at Neubert Elementary School are taking a trip to the Brookfield Zoo in May.

The trip is possible because Neubert second-grade teacher Monica Warr won a $1,000 Target field trip grant last week.

The discount store company's field trip grant program has awarded $1.6 million in grants to teachers around the country to fund field trips relating to what's being taught in the classroom.

The zoo field trip will help bring to life the animals Neubert's second-graders are learning about in their science class.
