Expert will advise parents on how to raise resilient kids
Bending, rather than breaking, during the stresses of life is essential -- not only to success but to happiness.
That is a skill that's learned most frequently from parents, said Gilda Ross, Glenbard High School District 87's student and community projects coordinator.
Nationally known clinical psychologist Robert Brooks tonight will discuss with parents ways of helping children become more resilient. His presentation, "Fostering Family Closeness & Respect," starts at 7 p.m. at Glenbard West High School, 670 Crescent Blvd., Glen Ellyn.
"Resilient kids are capable of communicating effectively, possessing empathy, having compassion and a social conscience," Ross said. "(Resilience) explains why some kids can conquer overwhelming obstacles and others become victims of their environment."
Brooks is a faculty member at Harvard Medical School and the author of numerous books, including "Raising Resilient Children." Ross said she heard him speak previously and became so convinced his message was essential that she worked with the DuPage County Regional Office of Education to bring him to the area.
"He really resonates with people," she said.
Parents who understand a goal of raising resilient children can focus on framing their interactions around achieving that. Brooks provides advice for parents to enhance a child's self-worth, establish realistic expectations and goals, and develop self-discipline.
