Aurora high schools to do indoor track meet

Track and field athletes from all seven high schools with Aurora addresses are invited to compete this weekend in the third annual Aurora City Indoor Track and Field Meet.

The varsity girls meet, hosted by Rosary High School, begins at 5 p.m. today at the Vaughan Athletic Center, 2121 W. Indian Trail.

The boys meet, sponsored by Marmion Academy, begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at the center.

Athletes from Waubonsie Valley, East Aurora, Rosary, West Aurora, Aurora Central Catholic, Aurora Christian and the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy are set to participate, meet manager Cliff Pennsyl said.

Pennsyl said field events, including long jump, triple jump, high jump and shot put, will be held during the first hour of the meet, with running events immediately following. Medals will be awarded for the first six places.

"This meet gives Aurora schools an opportunity to have an indoor meet at home, which promotes track for the city," Pennsyl said. "Indoor meets get kids involved and prepped for the outdoor season."

Before the Vaughan Athletic Center opened 2½ years ago, Pennsyl said, there wasn't a facility large enough to host a city indoor meet.

Tickets are $2. Call (630) 907-9600 for details.
