School's musical to benefit museum
Washington Junior High School students will play many different roles Sunday.
And it's not just because they're performing in the Naperville school's rendition of "High School Musical."
In addition to all that singing and dancing, the youngsters also will be generating some cold hard cash for the DuPage Children's Museum that's right across the street.
The junior high production takes the stage at 2 p.m. at the school, 201 N. Washington St., with proceeds from the $4 tickets going to support programs at the museum.
The school and museum have a close working relationship spurred, in part, by their close physical proximity. They've combined efforts for the past several years to put on stage shows.
"I think to perform for a cause that's going to help kids have fun learning is really cool," said Julie Van de Wille, who plays the musical's antagonist, Sharpay Evans. "I think the partnership is a really great idea."
Museum employee Jane Warfel, who is helping market the event, said the plays usually generate about $1,200 for the museum.
"Every year we've done this it's been a packed performance," Warfel said. "I think because it's 'High School Musical,' we're getting a bigger response than in other years."
Music teacher Lisa Wukitsch, who is directing the play, let the students choose the production this year. Votes also were cast for "Seussical the Musical" and "Alice in Wonderland."
"By at least three to one, HSM won out," Wukitsch said. "I feel that even if it isn't a classic-type musical, it is making students excited about musicals and productions."
Though the school doesn't receive any money for the play, Wukitsch said the performance is a learning experience for students.
"I believe the students benefit from the experience of being on stage," Wukitsch said. "Many of them meet other students that they may never interact with, and it creates a feeling of musical community and teamwork."
The student performers, too, understand that they're learning even as they help the museum.
"(Our directors) really help you understand that it's a good thing that you're doing something that entertains everyone else," Van de Wille said. "They help you believe you can do lots of stuff you wouldn't have thought you could do before."
