Learn about school, library referendums
You can learn more about ballot questions from the Kaneland school district and the Sugar Grove Public Library at an open house today.
The event is from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Sugar Grove Community House, 141 Main St.
The open house is sponsored by Citizens for Kaneland and the Sugar Grove Library Friends and representatives of those groups will be on hand to answer questions. Library trustees will be available from 7 to 8 p.m.
According to Tina Cella, who is doing communications for the library, this is an informal event designed to help voters make an informed decision.
Handouts, slide shows, architect's plans and artist's renderings of the new library, as well as plans for the school district construction, will be featured.
Employee honored
Sugar Grove library trustees honored Michelle Drawz for 20 years of service at a recent meeting.
Trustee Sheree Novotny presented Drawz with a certificate of achievement and Library Director Beverly Holmes Hughes presented her with a 20-year pin.
Hughes commended Drawz for "the high bar for service that you set for the staff and community."
Drawz, a resident of Big Rock, began working at the Sugar Grove Public Library in January 1988 as a library assistant. She has been the circulation manager since 1999. She is an active participant in several DuPage Library System circulation and planning groups.
Help make prom possible
Women in the Elburn/Sugar Grove area who have formal dresses they will never wear again can donate them to a good cause.
The Junior League of Kane and DuPage Counties is once again asking for help in stocking its annual Cinderella's Closet.
This year there are two drop-off locations in Elburn.
The project offers a formalwear boutique where high school juniors and seniors can select dresses, jewelry, shoes, purses and accessories to wear for prom. There is no charge.
"There are girls in need out here, too," said Shelley Weinlein, office administrator for the Elburn Chamber of Commerce. "It's expensive to go to prom, especially in these economic times. This helps take some of the pressure off."
The league also accepts new items. The league is collecting prom-style dresses of all sizes, (especially newer, updated styles) jewelry, accessories, shoes, purses and new make-up.
All donations are tax deductible and items can be dropped off through Feb. 9 at the Town and Country Public Library, 320 E. North St. and at Bright Cleaners, 107 Valley Drive, Unit C.
Weinlein came to Elburn from North Carolina where she was a member of the junior league. She began asking women she met about the league and she has joined the local chapter.
Weinlein said there are now 10 members of the league in her neighborhood of Blackberry Creek, up from only two a year ago.
For information, call Weinlein at (630) 365-2295 or Allison Kurtz at (312) 217-1476.
