Sudents' water conservation efforts rewarded
Three sixth-graders from Elgin's Fox River Country Day School recently were recognized for their entries in a four-county competition to raise awareness for water conservation.
The contest, which included students from Kane, Kendall, DuPage and DeKalb counties, was sponsored by PAMCANI, an alliance of plumbing and mechanical contractors located in Downers Grove. Stan Peters, executive director of the alliance, was at the school to announce the results. He explained that the slogan students were to have based their ideas on was "Go with the flow, wasting water is a no!"
The sixth-grade class worked on their posters as part of their environmental education class.
Mackenzie Greene of Barrington Hills won first place among the 750 entries. Mackenzie was given a $200 U.S. savings bond for her creative entry, showing a hose wastefully running water into a trash can. Mason Switzer of Crystal Lake won second place, receiving a $150 U.S. savings bond for his efforts, showing the differences in nature with and without enough water. Cassadee Hirsch of St. Charles was recognized with honorable mention.
Fox River Country Day School also received a check for $150 on behalf of PAMCANI. The school serves children in preschool to eighth grade 8 and it has been in existence since 1913. It is known for its accelerated curriculum, character education, arts programs, and wooded campus. For details, visit www.frcds.org.
