Schaumburg officer injured in scuffle with suspect
A Schaumburg police officer remains on medical leave after he was injured in a struggle with a suspect who officials said resisted arrest.
The officer broke a finger on one hand and tore ligaments in the other during the Sunday arrest, police said. Two other officers injured in the struggle were treated and returned to duty.
Israel Marcos Arroyo, 22, of 163404 Heron in Crest Hill, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, unlawful use of a weapon, defacing the serial number of a firearm and three counts of resisting arrest.
Arroyo's bond was set at $45,000.
Schaumburg police had been alerted to man holding a handgun while sitting in a car in a shopping center parking lot on the 100 block of North Barrington Road.
Upon arrival, officers found three men sitting in the backseat of a car that matched the description they'd received, Sgt. John Nebl said. Two other members of the group were shopping in a nearby store.
The three men in the vehicle were ordered out. At that time, Arroyo pushed one of the officers and dropped a 40-caliber handgun, according to police.
Authorities said Arroyo then tried to run away. He had to be tackled by pursuing officers and kicked and struggled against them while being subdued, Nebl added.
None of the other men with Arroyo participated in the struggle or became involved. Only one of them - 24-year-old Courtnei Glenn Travis of 225 E. 132nd in Riverdale - was also arrested on an outstanding Cook County warrant, Nebl said.
