Junior League accepts applications for grants

The Junior League of Kane and DuPage Counties Inc. is now accepting applications for its 2008 Grants for Innovative Teaching Program.

Each year, the organization awards a number of $500 grants to teachers who present outstanding programming for students in Kane, DuPage, Kendall or Will counties.

"Improving the lives of children in our communities is a major focus for us and we are pleased to once again be able to recognize and support the innovative ideas of teachers who share this vision," said JLKD President Mandie Cummins.

The mission of the Grants for Innovative Teaching Program is to improve education by funding unique programs designed especially for particular schools or grade levels and to encourage and support excellence in teaching.

Previous grant-winning programs have included the "You've Got Mail" youth correspondence project at Salt Creek School in Elmhurst; "Volumes of Visuals," a computerized communication program for students with disabilities at Coutrap Elementary School in Geneva; and "Speeding Ticket Task Force," a project at Lake Park High School in Roselle through which students use real-world statistics to make mathematical computations. This year, JLKD will award grants to up to three of the most impressive applicants.

The JLKD Grants for Innovative Teaching Program welcomes applications from teachers employed full- or part-time at any public or private school serving students in kindergarten to 12th grade within the four county area (Kane, DuPage, Kendall and Will).

Applications are being accepted through April 30. More information and application materials are available online at www.jlkd.org.
