Briefs: Grant deadline nears
The Libertyville Junior Woman's Club is accepting applications for the 2008 outstanding female student award. The $1,000 award will be presented to a female high school senior desiring to further her professional or vocational training. The funds can be applied toward tuition, books or expenses. Applications are available at Cook Memorial Public Library and Libertyville, Vernon Hills and Carmel high schools. Applications must be returned by Thursday. Lecture on Iran, Islam
A sociology professor and chairman of the Islamic world studies program at Lake Forest College will speak about his personal experiences in Iran and how conflicting interpretations of Islam shape the global climate. Ahmad Sadri will speak from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 17 at Countryside Unitarian Universalist Church, 1025 N. Smith Road, Palatine. A donation of $10 will be accepted at the door. Forest preserve program:Œ
Families are invited to learn what lies beneath the snow and icy waters in an upcoming program sponsored by the Lake County Forest Preserve District. What Lies Beneath is offered from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Ryerson Woods near Deerfield. The event is open to all ages. Participants will learn which animals hibernate, which remain active and how animals adapt to the colder climate. Cost is $7 per person ($5 for Lake County residents).
