Republican debate tonight
Republican clubs from Antioch and Lake Villa townships will host a debate today at 7 p.m. for three candidates in the 8th Congressional District. GOP candidates Steve Greenberg of Long Grove and Gurnee residents Kirk Morris and Kenneth Arnold will participate in the event at the Lake Villa Township community center's west campus, 38750 N. Route 59, just south of Grand Avenue. The center is in the former Gavin North school. Organizers said the candidates will be questioned on health care, immigration, homeland security, taxes and other topics. The 8th Congressional District includes northwest Cook, eastern McHenry and western Lake counties. Declared Republicans will choose from the three candidates in the Feb. 5 primary. Incumbent Melissa Bean of Barrington faces Lindenhurst activist Randi Scheurer in the Democratic primary.
Not quite a millionaire
Vivek Bavda, a 1999 graduate of Libertyville High School, walked away with $1,000 in winnings after incorrectly guessing the answer to the $8,000 question on Tuesday's episode of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire." Bavda, 30, of Mundelein, used both his Phone A Friend and 50-50 lifelines on the $8,000 question, which was: "Which of these movie actors shares two of his names with a famous heavy-metal drummer? A.) Tommy Lee Jones, B.) Billy Dee Williams, C.) Edward James Olmos, D.) Lou Diamond Phillips." He guessed B. The correct answer is A.
No decision yet
The Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board deferred proposals by Vista Health Systems and Advocate Health Care on Tuesday to build new hospitals in Lindenhurst and Round Lake Beach, respectively. The board has asked both medical groups to present their proposals during the board's April meeting. During the same meeting, the planning board approved Vista's plans for a $15 million, 60,000-square-foot medical office building to be built in front of the Vista Surgery Center, which is near the Grand Avenue and Deep Lake Road in Lindenhurst.
