Schaumburg fire under control; displaced include Conant students

Schaumburg firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that moved rapidly through a section of one building in the Legend Park Apartments south of Wise Road.

Everyone was safely evacuated from the building and no one was injured.

The fire appeared to have started in a first floor unit of 1221 Crabtree Lane late Wednesday morning, property manager Deanna Stein said.

There are 32 units in the entire building, but firefighters were trying to contain the blaze to the center section of 12 units. All three floors of that section appeared to be affected by the fire before it was extinguished.

Officials in the apartment complex management office said the fire was under control by mid-afternoon.

"This building was pretty engulfed," Schaumburg Police Chief Brian Howerton said at the scene.

He believed the first call to the fire came at about 11:30 a.m.

The apartment complex is across Wise Road from Robert Frost Junior High School.

Wise Road was closed between Roselle Road and Mitchell Boulevard while fire crews were on the scene.

Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 spokesman Tom Petersen said about 40 Conant High School students also live in the apartment complex.

The district is developing a transportation plan. They will bus students to the apartment complex clubhouse where the American Red Cross has set up to tend to residents, Petersen said. He added that students would also be housed in the high school if needed.
