UConn has Moore, and so much more
STORRS, Conn. -- Maya Moore said Connecticut, while respecting its opponents, doesn't plan to show them any mercy.
Moore scored 25 points Wednesday and top-ranked UConn continued to roll, winning its Big East home opener 84-48 over No. 16 West Virginia.
Tina Charles had 18 points and 14 rebounds, her third consecutive double-double, and Renee Montgomery tied her career high with 9 assists for UConn (14-0, 2-0 Big East).
Mel Thomas had 14 points, and was 4-for-6 from 3-point range.
"We expect to do what we just did to every team we play," Moore said.
What they did was hold the Mountaineers scoreless for the first 4:50 of the game, three days after holding Purdue without a field goal for more than 10 minutes.
"When you get off to a quick start like we have, it forces the other teams to have to come back at you, and if they don't it just kind of starts to snow ball," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said.
The Mountaineers missed their first 8 shots, and the Huskies jumped out to a 13-0 lead before Chakhia Cole hit a 3-pointer. By the time West Virginia coach Mike Carey called his second timeout, with 11:49 remaining in the half, it was already 27-5.
"They are a very good basketball team -- big, strong, play hard, physical," Carey said. "We were soft, little and scared."
Sanni Olayinka led West Virginia with 12 points, but hit just 5-for-15 shots. Sparkle Davis had 11. Meg Bulger, the Mountaineers' biggest outside threat, hit just 1 of 8 shots and scored just 4 points.
West Virginia had been averaging more than 76 points, but managed to score just 7 more than the 41 points per game that UConn had been allowing.
UConn came in winning by an average of 43 points, and had beaten its past three opponents by 49, 50 and 50 points. UConn's closest game of the season has been a 66-54 win over No. 7 Stanford.
Oklahoma 67, Iowa St. 64: Freshman Danielle Robinson scored a career-high 23 points to lead No. 6 Oklahoma (10-2, 1-0, Big 12) past host Iowa State (11-3, 0-1) in a rematch of last season's Big 12 title game.
Kelsey Bolte led Iowa State with a career-high 23 points.
Baylor 72, Texas Tech 67: Jessica Morrow and Jhasmin Player each scored 19 points, and No. 8 Baylor (13-1, 1-0) beat host Texas Tech (12-3, 0-1) in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Dominic Seals tied a career high with 22 for Texas Tech.
