Two hurt in extra-alarm Woodridge apartment fire

At least two people were injured early Friday morning in a two-alarm blaze at an apartment building in the 2500 block of Waterbury Court in Woodridge, fire officials said.

Officials said an automatic fire alarm alerted the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District at 4:22 a.m., and units arriving at the scene saw heavy smoke inside, according to a news release.

The release added officials arriving at the scene learned of trapped residents inside the structure. Crews upgraded the fire to a second alarm, as well as sent rescuers inside to pull the victims out of the blaze.

Heavy fire conditions were seen on the third floor, officials said, where two successful rescues were made, the release continues. The unidentified victims were transported to local hospitals.

The fire was under control by 5:30 a.m., officials said, but units remained on the scene until about 9:30 a.m. putting out hot spots and salvaging the facility. At least 10 ambulances were called to scene to be used as warming centers for the residents.

The building was declared uninhabitable by fire officials. Occupants made their own arrangements with help from the fire district, the release states.

The DuPage County Arson Task Force has been called in to investigate the scene, officials said. Officials have not announced the cause of the fire, nor have they said if arson is suspected.

The Lisle-Woodridge Fire District was assisted by departments from Argonne, Darien-Woodridge, Downers Grove, Hinsdale, Lemont, Lombard, Naperville, Romeoville, Warrenville, Wheaton and York Center.
