Lake in the Hills teen charged in attempted holdup

An 18-year-old Lake in the Hills man remained locked up in the McHenry County jail Monday after his weekend arrest on charges he tried to rob a man last month with a pellet gun.

Albert L. Santana, of the first block of Woody Way, faces charged of attempted robbery and aggravated assault stemming from the Oct. 23 incident in the 200 block of North Randall Road in Lake in the Hills.

Mary Frake, chief of support services for Lake in the Hills police, said Santana, the victim and several others were in a parking lot at that location about 7 p.m. for a drug transaction. Santana, she said, pulled out what appeared to be a black handgun and tried to take the victim's money, but the man managed to get away without being harmed or losing any of his belongings.

The victim called police the next day and identified Santana, an acquaintance, as the man with the gun, Frake said.

Santana, in custody on $35,00 bond, is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 13. He could face up to five years in prison if found guilty of attempted robbery and a year in the county jail if convicted of aggravated assault.

Frake said the investigation is ongoing and further charges are possible.
