Man hospitalized after cut in Cary brawl

Cary police are seeking the public's help in determining who stabbed a man in the back during a Sunday evening brawl involving at least 12 combatants outside a village apartment complex.

Officers were called to the Sunset Apartments, at 100 East Sunset Drive, about 6:30 p.m. in response to a report of numerous people fighting, Deputy Police Chief Ed Synek said.

Most of the fight's participants fled when police arrived, but officers discovered a 21-year-old Cary man lying in the complex parking lot bleeding from his back. The man was taken by ambulance to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington for what Synek described as a nonlife threatening laceration across his back, likely caused by a knife of broken bottle.

Synek said no weapon was recovered at the scene.

According to witnesses, the incident began when a gray van pulled into the parking lot and four men got out to fight with the victim and a group of men with him.

"We have no information that it was gang-related, or any other reason why so many people were fighting," Synek said.

Anyone with information about a possible suspect is asked to call Cary police at (847) 639-2341 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-762-STOP.
