Bartlett hands out award for officer of the year

Meet Bartlett's finest.

Officer William Naydenoff recently was named Bartlett Police Officer of the Year for 2007.

Naydenoff took the lead in several high-profile cases during his first year as a directed patrol team member, department heads said.

In one instance, an investigation into an illegal gambling ring resulted in convictions for each suspect and $7,000 in seized assets.

He also assisted the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency with information and surveillance that culminated in the arrest of a Bartlett resident and an asset forfeiture of more than $20,000.

The police force made note of Naydenoff's excellent work record and his reputation for dedication and compassion.

Former officer and current accreditation manager Nora Ackerley was awarded the Bartlett Police Department's Civilian Employee of the Year.

Expansion ready to spring: Change is coming to the Poplar Creek Public Library.

Preparations start this week for the demolition work that will precede construction of the main library's expansion at 1405 S. Park Ave., Streamwood.

The back parking lot already is fenced off and eventually will be filled by an addition that will double the present size of the 30-year-old library.

Library officials expect materials and staff will be relocated to a temporary facility at the end of May, but that location has not yet been finalized.

The work comes after months of fine-tuning and permit applications that followed voters' approval of the $22.7 million project last April.

In addition to providing more shelf space for the library's growing collection, the expansion also will bring quiet reading rooms to both floors, a dedicated teen area, an expanded audiovisual department, improved accessibility for wheelchairs and strollers, WiFi capability and an environmentally friendly "green roof" that will decrease the amount of stormwater capacity needed by using plants to absorb much of it.

Resource at your disposal: The Hanover Park Community Resource Center opens to the public Saturday.

Living Christ Lutheran Church has donated the use of its building at Greenbrook Boulevard and Arlington Drive from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday.

The center will feature a computer lab equipped with basic programs and a quiet study area with books. Trained volunteers will tutor, teach basic computer classes and provide life coaching. For more information, call (630) 837-2100.
