Briefs: Brick paver fundraiser

The Coultrap Elementary School PTO is selling commemorative brick pavers to be placed in the entrance of the new Williamsburg Elementary School in Geneva. Williamsburg will replace Coultrap this fall. The bricks, which cost $50 or $100, can be engraved with personalized messages. Orders are due today. Call Christine Rodgers at (630) 845-8501.

Students win merit awards

Three Tri-Cities area students have been named National Merit Scholarship winners. Justin C. Johnson of the Illinois Math and Science Academy, Patrick Eschenfeldt of St. Charles North and Erin A. Kelsey of Burlington Central were among 2,500 high school seniors chosen from a national pool of 15,000 finalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Lead-foot drivers beware:

Extra St. Charles police will hit the streets today for a monthlong safety campaign targeting speeders. Police plan to focus on parts of Main Street east and west of the Fox River, Route 31 and South Kirk Road. The campaign is funded by an Illinois Department of Transportation grant.

Historic trial, part deux

An 1858 trial that pitted a former school treasurer against a bank owner over tax receipts for a local school district will be re-enacted in the old Kane County Courthouse in downtown Geneva. The historic case will be tried again at 7 tonight with modern-day attorneys wearing period costumes. The event, in Courtroom 340 of the courthouse at 100 S. Third St., will be presided by Chief Judge Don Hudson. The trial is part of the Kane County Bar Association's 150th anniversary celebration. Call (630) 762-1915.

Remodeling contest

Mid-Valley Neighborhood Improvement Association Inc. is accepting entries for Neighborhood Pride Week, which is May 18 to 24. Properties in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles cities and townships are eligible Remodeling categories include landscaping, exterior (includes landscaping/painting), additions, exterior renovation (includes new and historic) and commercial, from January 2007 through today, when entries are due. Forms are available at www.mvnia.org or by calling (630) 584-1996. MVNIA provides resources to rehabilitate, maintain and preserve our neighborhoods. MVNIA's Emergency Home Repair Fund assists moderate-income families in maintaining safe living conditions.

Pavarotti tribute concert:

The late Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti will be honored at a tribute concert Saturday at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. We Go Run Sunday

The fourth annual We Go Run will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday at West Chicago High School's Memorial Stadium, 326 Joliet St. The event will include 5K and 10K races, as well as a one-mile run for children. Proceeds benefit the eight West Chicago Elementary District 33 schools. Registration forms are available at District 33 schools, the district office at 312 E.
